  • ADI KHAI PIDUTHAM
India is considered as the cradle of all martial arts. In the great in the epos of the Hindus Mahabharata, which was created more than thousands year B.C., it is discussed about the Kshatriya estate − varna of professional soldiers. In this poem, as in many other ancient texts as well, there is information about different military exercises of Kshatriya. Even nowadays, in many states of India there are schools of the martial arts that have origin lost in the depth of centuries. One of them − Adi Khai Pidutham, that exists in the Kannur district, state of Kerala. This school is leaded by 80-years-old Kumara Swamy. European, who once visited him, recalls:
− I could not believe, that the teacher is of so sunset age. He held on directly as spark plug, his body was body of athlete − sinewy, nervous, without any gram of fat. The skin was smooth of young person. Motions, gestures − soft and graceful of wild cat. Nothing slipped of his bright sparkle eyes.
On Malayalam − Dravidian (natives of the Indian south) language − the word pidutham means control of the hands −khay− hitting the most vulnerable points of human body −Adi. This technique outwardly resembles Japanese Jujutsu: seizures with a passage to the painful methods and the subsequent inflicting of impacts by fingers on the points. However, this precisely formal resemblance, since Indian system is considerably older. Frequently thrusts follow instead of the impacts after seizures. General physical preparation is represented by the static gymnastics; asanas and the respiratory exercises − pranayama − of Hatha yoga. There is a powerful tool − Marma, which is the complex of the information about arrangement and functioning of the nervous and energy centers of the human organism. Nowadays, the practice of Adi Khai Pidutham is extended among the members of the sect of Sidokha−Samayya, which established by guru Sivananda Paramahamsa in early 20th century. Sect follows principles of nonviolence, but the supporters have command soft methods of self defense, which make it possible to reliably neutralize aggressors, leading the matter either to the mutilation or, all the more, to the murder.
